A kindergarten built by its community.
1952
A local family (Mrs WR Smith) recognised the need for a kindergarten in the growing Mt Gravatt community, lobbying local families to fundraise to make it a reality.
1956
After years of fundraising, the community raised £1,000, secured a bank loan and built the kindergarten with almost entirely volunteer labour, officially opening in 1958.
1960s to 1970s
The kindergarten really hit its stride with the arrival of Miss Mary Luddy in 1970, who dedicated herself to the centre for over 35 years, before she retired in 2009.
Today
Almost 70 years later, the kindergarten continues to be shaped and supported by its community.
The people have changed. The children have changed. The community spirit remains.
At Mt Gravatt Community Kindergarten and in this special place called Kaggur Mabul '
Land of the Echidna' we acknowledge the traditional custodians of these lands.
We share and care for this space with past, present and future families who explore, discover,
play, learn, laugh with friends and connect with nature on this special mountain.
